Business Supporters

What We Support Will Grow

As consumers become more aware of the power of their patronage and with the initiative necessary to take a stand for a healthy ecology, we are realizing that we can change the business world by boycotts of products and services. While this is an important and useful tool, we must also become aware of the other side of this coin – the need to give support to businesses that reflect the qualities that we value! Without consumer support, such businesses cannot thrive.

Is it important to you to have products available that are manufactured in an environment-friendly manner? How about businesses that ensure their own materials suppliers follow environmentally and socially acceptable practices? No child labor used. No worker exploitation. Would you also choose businesses that donate a percentage of their profits to animal defense and rescue? Shopping is a pleasure when Eco-friendly businesses are available.

For businesses offering a time-limited support, suggest contacting that business to request continued donations of a portion of the profits from your order. If I were a business owner receiving such a request, I’d certainly continue sponsorship and consider that donation an honor.

To submit an eco-friendly business for inclusion, please contact Paws Across the Nation. This is an absolutely free service offered by Paws to do our part in promoting Earth-Friendly/Animal Supporting businesses!

Grounds & Hounds

Source: Grounds & HoundsWhen you brew a cup of coffee from Grounds & Hounds, a caffeine kick isn’t the only perk you’ll get. The company, founded by Jordan Karcher, uses fair trade organic beans from the best growing regions around the world, and 20% of all profits go to local dog rescues and no-kill animal shelters across the country.

Having grown up with Dalmatians, Karcher’s been a dog lover for as long as he can remember, and a coffee connoisseur since he was a teenager. The initial idea to marry his two passions came in 2010, but the driving force for Grounds & Hounds came two years later in the form of a mutt muse named Molly.

On the Grounds & Hounds’ website, Karcher remembers the time he first met his speckled pup.

I unexpectedly stumbled upon a dog adoption operating on the side of Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, CA. I was in no way planning, or prepared to adopt a rescue animal when I left the house that morning, but when a malnourished, brown and white, Dalmatian crawled into my lap, it was clear that I would be welcoming a new member to my family. She immediately became the center of my life and I cannot imagine a day without her.

Karcher says adopting Molly was the best decision he’s ever made. The gratification and joy she brought into his life is what motivated Karcher to turn Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co. into a reality.  Read more…

Trovato Interiors

Trovato Interiors was designed as a stage for seeking both excellence and pleasure in the homes we create. The boutique style setting is intimate in scale, but broad in possibility, as the furnishings are merely representative of what is possible with a custom approach. Excellence requires neither extensive time nor money, but some heart and vision are necessary. See some of their fine items here.

What makes some rooms sing? What makes them special in ways that can’t just be defined by good design principles? The pursuit of that enigma is the guiding force behind Trovato Interiors.

I have raved about this chocolate for months! It’s a rich and satisfying delight without the additives and chemicals found in standard chocolates today. Personal tip: Knowing that you supported wildlife conservation with the purchase of that chocolate takes away the tiny guilt most of us feel when indulging.

Support rescue efforts - buy chocolates from rescuechocolate.comRescue Chocolate is “the sweetest way to save a life!” From each chocolate purchased, 100% of the net profits are donated to animal rescue organizations around the country. To see current and past beneficiaries just click on the Who We Help link at the top of the page. We were founded in January 2010 and we are headquartered in Brooklyn, NY.

The packaging of each vegan flavor of Rescue Chocolate sheds light on a different aspect of the current pet “overpopulation” epidemic. Not only are we interested in raising funds for rescues, but we want to get the word out about these oh-so-fixable issues!

Current and future flavors include:

  • Peanut Butter Pit Bull (crispy peanut butter and chocolate, countering the negative public image of the pit bull-type dogs)
  • Pick Me! Pepper (sweet ’n spicy dark chocolate with peppers, highlighting the advantages of choosing pets from animal shelters instead of breeders or pet stores)
  • Foster-iffic Peppermint (dark chocolate with peppermint, highlighting the need for people to provide foster care for shelter animals as they await their forever homes)
  • The Fix (plain 72%, highlighting the importance of spay and neuter)
  • Mission Feral Fig (fig, cranberry, almond, and spices, highlighting the humane solution for feral cats, TNR)
  • Fakin’ Bacon (smoky, sweet and salty, a salute to farm animal sanctuaries and compassionate gourmands)
  • Forever Mocha (hazelnut praline and coffee, highlighting ways to help people make and honor a lifetime commitment to their pets)

Outdoor PlayAs far as is  known, Outdoor Play does not actively sponsor wildlife defense and rescue organizations. So why are they featured here? Because it has been confirmed that Outdoor Play turned down what was undoubtedly a substantial order from SeaWorld. Why did they do that? They do not support SeaWorld’s business ethics.

“SeaWorld is a corporation that puts corporate profits ahead of ethical issues.”

“We’re a for-profit too, and a for-profit has to make a profit. But if you have to violate your ethics – that’s the tipping point.”

While they didn’t single SeaWorld out from the other corporations they see putting profit before ethics, the nature of SeaWorld’s model and extent of their reach made the decision to not claim them as a customer an easy one for Outdoorplay to make. “It’s not just SeaWorld, but they have so much power and cut such a wide path. And this is the world our daughter is going to grow up in.”

Their daughter, Soleil, will turn two in October, and Tree and Stevie intend to raise her as a “citizen of the world.”

“We cannot win this battle to save species and environments without forging an emotional bond between ourselves and nature—for we will not fight to save what we do not love.”
